Tulsa Opens Exhibition Season Tonight
Nov. 2, 2006
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa men's basketball team plays its first of two exhibition games tonight against Cameron University at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tip-off time is scheduled for 7:06 pm.
The Hurricane is coming off of an 11-17 overall record last year under Doug Wojcik, who was in his first season as the Tulsa head coach.
Tulsa enters the 2006-07 season with four returning starters and seven letterwinners. The starters back from a year ago are frontcourt players Darold Crow, Charles Ramsdell and Sam Mitchell, while Brett McDade returns to the backcourt.
McDade is the returning leading scorer with a 10.1 scoring average, while Ramsdell is Tulsa's leading returning rebounder with a 6.2 average.
Tulsa has five new faces on this year's roster, but also has two scholarship players who sat out last year, including forward Sean Coleman and guard Rod Earls. The newcomers include junior college transfer Calvin Walls, who comes to Tulsa from Iowa Western CC, after a brief stint at Wichita State, as well as freshmen guards Ben Uzoh and Mark Hill and frontcourt players Jerome Jordan and Jamel McLean.
This season's version of the Hurricane basketball team will have a year's experience to draw upon under its second-year head coach. Depth, athleticism and versatility have been some of the "buzz" words that have been used to describe this Tulsa team.
"I think the depth, versatility and being a better rebounding team are definite strengths for us," said Wojcik. "We have really good depth, and even though its young depth, we have good depth and we'll be more athletic."
Wojcik likes his team's versatility where he'll have the ability to put different lineups on the floor that will pose match-up problems for the opposition.
Tulsa fans will get a look at that versatility Thursday night.
Tulsa and Cameron played before in an exhibition contest in November 2004, as the Hurricane claimed an 82-49 victory.
